Wynonna Earp was the dark horse summer hit about a twenty-first century demon shooting gunslinger. With its plot twists, fantastic cast and quippy one-liners Wynonna Earp felt like the natural successor to shows like Buffy.
One of the most popular aspects of the show has been the relationship between Wynona’s little sister Waverly Earp and Officer Nicole Haught. The romance between the two came at a time that the ‘bury your gays’ trope was moving its way around a lot of major TV shows.
WayHaught (The couple’s ship name) showed well developed gay relationships between well-rounded characters meant the show gained praised for inverting the trope and for Katherine Barrell’s acting…
In an interview with TheGeekiary Katherine Barrell, the actress behind Officer Haught gave some insight into the character:
I think at the end of season one Nicole is evidently relieved to finally be let into the secret of the Earp curse and Black Badge Division…the opportunity to play Nicole made me feel like I was actually making a difference in someone’s life…I think Nicole wants to be included in the Black Badge gang. I think she craves more challenging work as an officer and wants to take her career to the next level.
With the new series airing in Summer 2017 we can’t wait to see where Officer Haught and the whole Black Badge gang end up.
