Supergirl ‘Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk’ Review

Supergirl proves it’s rom-com superhero status a belated Valentines Day episode that warms my cold black heart.

Mr. Mxyzptlk appeared at the end of last episode declaring his undying love to Kara and ruining Mon-El/Kara first kiss.

A fifth dimension reality bending being who’s decided that he and Kara are destined to be together and he’s intent on doing anything to convince her of that whether it’s filling up her apartment with roses or unleashing a villainous alien on downtown.

With it’s Alien of the week being romance themed Supergirl puts the spotlight on the relationships of team DEO, although Jimmy is nowhere to be seen #JimmyDeservesBeter.

J’onn is continuing his intergalactic relationship with Ms. Martian with a love letter. Kara and Mon-El address the issues in their pre-relationship including Mon-El’s Jerkish streak and Kara’s need to do everything by herself.

Sidenote: Maybe it’s my leftover Vampire Diaries juju but I can’t help but feel there’s something sinister about Mon-El, he still hasn’t confessed he’s a Daxom prince and his casualness about killing Mxyz suggests something a little darker.

Meanwhile, Alex and Maggie and going through their first Valentine’s Day together, as Maggie admits her coming out wasn’t the sweet experience she said it was. Instead, she was forced out of the closet on Valentine’s Day souring her experience of the holiday. I’m glad that they’re taking their sweet time fleshing out Maggie’s character and creating a believable counterpart for Alex.

The episode feels decidedly 90s in its feel, I don’t know why but it’s the rumpelstiltskin effect of destroying an all powerful being with a simple method is perfectly corny and I love it. If it wasn’t for the actor playing Mxyzptlk being just the right balance of creepy and hilarious, this episode could have run the risk of being unremarkable filler.

But the stakes are never high when it comes to Supergirl, you know everyone is coming out alive, I think that’s going to have to change pretty soon.

The episode finally ends with Mon-El and Kara’s first kiss, Mxyzptlk was a very strong episode for the both of them as prior to this their chemistry worked better when they were sparring now seem like an actual romantic pairing and I’m all for it.
